How to wear ankle boots

How often do you find yourself standing in front of the shoe rack wondering what shoes to wear? Winter, in particular, seems to be a challenging time for many women when it comes to picking the right footwear.

Some ladies I chatted to on Instagram over the last few days have asked me to do a post on how to wear ankle boots as they seem to really struggle with this. On one hand, they want to stay warm. On the other, they are unsure how to wear their boots.

Some of the common worries they have are: “I don’t know what to do with my jeans”, “Ankle boots make my legs look fat” or “They don’t go well with my skirts”.

As colder months don’t mean you have to sacrifice your style, today I wanted to share with you a few tips to help you wear ankle boots with confidence.

Ankle boots with trousers

  • Consider the height of your boots. Boots that are lower (maximum 2” above the ankle bone) will help you elongate the leg
  • If you are wearing boots with boyfriend jeans, cuff them to reveal a bit of ankle
  • Skinny jeans can be tucked in or cuffed. However, if you wear tight fitting legging style jeans, I recommend tucking them into the boots to prevent them from looking bunchy
  • Jeans with spilt hem look better when paired with a lower shaft bootie
  • If you wear bootcut jeans, the hem of your jeans should come within an inch of the ground without touching the ground
  • Wear ankle boots with tailored trousers. Opt for slim leg trousers and boots with a lower shaft to reveal a bit of skin

Ankle boots with skirts and dresses

Don’t shy away from teaming your ankle boots with skirts and dresses. Here are a few things to consider:

  • If you want to elongate the leg, team your black pencil skirt with black opaque tights and black boots
  • Choose ankle boots that are just above the ankle if you are worried that your legs will look stumpy
  • Don’t wear coloured ankle boots with black opaque tights as they will chop off the leg
  • Keep your skirt in the same style range as your boots
